National Ice Cream Day in the U.S.A: It's Time to Scream for Ice Cream

Have you heard the big “scoop?” If you’re looking for a sweet treat to eat, you’re in luck! A highly anticipated holiday is here and Americans are in the “moood” to celebrate. The third Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day in the U.S.A. Whether you scream or I scream, we all need to scream for ice cream especially during the dog days of summer!

In 1984, United States President Ronald Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month and also designated the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day, too. Whether you prefer to lick it, dip it or eat it with a spoon, by the scoop, in a crunchy cone, in a float or ala mode, Americans sure love ice cream. 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream and “related frozen desserts” were produced in America in 2011, according to the International Dairy Foods Association. And believe it or not, vanilla is still America’s number one choice when it comes to ice cream flavors. Chocolate, cookie and cream, strawberry and chocolate chip mint round out the top five flavors.

In honor of National Ice Cream Day, many businesses will serve up cool and creamy treats to eat at a reduced cost.
