National Cereal Day

Today is National Cereal Day! This annual food holiday, celebrated each year on March 7, is all about cereal.

Whether you prefer yours hot or cold, smothered in milk, loaded with sugar or topped with healthy fruit, folks have been enjoying cereal for years. Legend has it that housewives actually came up with the idea when they served popcorn sprinkled with sugar and cream for breakfast. And in the 1800s, cereal became an alternative to the heavier, meat-filled traditional breakfast.

But it was two brothers who "discovered" one of the most important food products of modern times. William and Dr. John Kellogg not only invented the first corn flakes, call “flaked corn,” but went on to create one of the largest cereal companies in the world.

Dr. Kellogg worked tirelessly to develop healthier foods for his patients at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. After inventing the first corn flake, Sanitas Toasted Corn Flakes were such a huge hit, they were mass produced. And the rest as they say, is history. After 100 years, Kellogg Corn Flakes continue to be a popular cereal today.
