National Pet Day

Pets

April 11 is going to the dogs - and cats, gerbils, rabbits, fish and rats. Whether they have four legs, two legs or no legs at all, today is National Pet Day!

Founded in 2006 by animal lover, Celebrity Pet Lifestyle Expert and former human paramedic, Colleen Paige, National Pet Day serves several purposes. National Pet Day, also referred to as Pet Day USA, celebrates all creatures great and small. For many Americans, pets are not just dogs or cats – they are beloved members of the family.

But millions of cats and dogs across America won't get a happy ‘tail’ ending. Many of these beautiful creatures have been abandoned, neglected, abused or unloved and end up in shelters by no fault of their own. And many never make it out alive. It is estimated that 16,000 pets die every single day in American shelters. 16,000!

In an online interview, Paige said:

“National Pet Day is a day to celebrate the pets in your life but also to encourage adoption! Almost any pet you might like to add to your family can be found at a shelter or rescue. Pet stores are supplied by animal brokers and puppy and kitten mills which neglect and abuse animals and continue to perpetuate the over population of unwanted animals in this country. Always ADOPT instead of SHOP!"

If you are considering adding a furry friend to your family, please consider adopting from a local shelter or humane society. Don’t shop – adopt. Please give a four-legged friend, or two, a ‘fur-ever’ home – before it’s too late.

Today is also 8-Track Tape Day.
