National Mutt Day

When it comes to “howlidays,” Dec. 2 is going to the dogs! Literally! It’s National Mutt Day, an annual holiday that celebrates those lovable dogs without papers – mutts.

Animal Welfare Advocate, Celebrity Pet Expert and animal lover, Colleen Paige, created National Mutt Day in 2005 in an effort to educate the public about the plight of the mutt. National Mutt Day encourages people around the country to adopt a dog-in-need from animal shelters across the nation instead of pet stores.

Many shelters across America are inundated with unloved, abused, neglected and unwanted pets. The majority of dogs in American shelters waiting for homes are mutts. But sadly, many of these amazing animals will never make it out alive. The goal of the event is to help find ‘furever’ homes for 10,000 mutts in shelters around the country. In fact, raising awareness is so important; National Mutt Day is observed twice a year – once in July and again on Dec. 2.

If you have been considering opening your heart and your home to a dog, please consider adopting a mixed breed, before it’s too late. Far too many animals are dying to find a home. If you are unable to adopt at this time, please consider making a monetary donation to your local animal shelter or volunteer your time in honor of National Mutt Day. Let's all help give a new leash on life for the popular pooches without papers.

Dec. 2 is also Special Education Day.
