Happy Cat Month: Month-long holiday helps Fluffy stay happy and healthy

Have you heard the "mews?" September is Happy Cat Month, a month-long "howliday" dedicated to keeping those precious cats happy, healthy and safe. Whether you have just one or are considered the crazy cat lady, September is all about fabulous felines. "Purrfect!"

Cats add so much to our lives. Not only do felines provide unconditional love and companionship, they are good for us too. Did you know cat owners have a reduced risk ofstroke and heart attack? According to a 10-year study, owning a cat can reduce the risk of a heart attack by nearly one third. Petting a cat reduces the heart rate and blood pressure. And because of their calming nature, owning a cat also reduces stress levels in humans as well.

Cats Rule!

While cats provide physical and mental health benefits for humans, cat lovers won’t be surprised to learn that Americans own more cats than dogs. Americans “own” 82 million cats compared to 72 million dogs. Cats Rule!

Adopt a Cat

Due to the current economic conditions and high unemployment, many shelters are inundated with loving and loyal pets. Many of these magnificent animals end up in shelters through no fault of their own. According to the ASPCA, 5 to 7 million animals end up in American shelters. Sadly, up to 4 million of those animals are euthanized each year!

So many beautiful cats are searching for 'furever' homes. Please consider opening your heart and your home to an animal in need, before it is too late.

Animals have no voice. It is up to us to ensure they lead happy, healthy and long lives.
