National S'mores Day: S'more sweet treats to eat, please
If you’re in the mood for a sweet treat to eat, you’re in luck! Hip hip hooray - Aug. 10 is National S’mores Day in the U.S.A! This annual food holiday celebrates one of the sweetest combinations of deliciousness known to mankind – s’mores!
While the origins of the sweet treat are unknown, a 1927 Girl Scout handbook, “Tramping and Trailing”, includes the first known printed s’mores recipe. And if you are wondering where the unusual name came from, you aren’t alone. Legend has it that some children said “Gimme some more” after devouring some s'mores at a campfire, and the rest, as they say, is food history.
These delightful treats are typically made with three ingredients – marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers. And for many of us, s’mores conjure up memories of our youth, camping trips and memorable moments spent around the campfire with loved ones. Who can resist a heapin’ helpin’ of ooey gooey melted chocolate and roasted marshmallows sandwiched between two graham crackers over a cracklin’ campfire?
While traditional s’mores consist of three simple ingredients, today’s s’mores can be made with a variety of ingredients, with or without a roaring fire. From parfaits, cupcakes and cheesecakes to dips, quesadillas and cocktails, the sky is the limit when it comes to modern-day s’mores. Fun to make and delicious to eat, s'mores are still popular treats to eat today. According to the fine folks at HERSHEY’S, approximately 2.3 million s’mores are gobbled up during the summer months.
Why not take a stroll down memory lane and make a few new memories with those special people in your life by whipping up a tried-and-true or brand spankin’ new s’mores recipe? Happy National S’mores Day. Today is also Lazy Day!
