Betty Boop's Birthday
Aug. 9 not only celebrates literature and dance, but also celebrates the birthday of a real American character! Aug. 9 is Betty Boop's birthday!
Betty Boop
Betty Boop made her official debut on this day back in 1930. Created by Max Fleischer, she began her rise to fame as Bimbo the dog's girlfriend in the cartoon, "Dizzy Dishes." Like most of us, Betty's looks changed quite a bit over the years. In the early days, Betty Boop was considered a real dog! She had poodle characteristics including doggy ears and a poodle nose. But over time, her doggish features became more human-like. And as her popularity grew, she began to resemble famous actors' Helene Kane and Clara Bow. At one point, Kane actually sued Fleischer and Paramount Studios for using her likeness without her permission. After a two year court battle, Kane lost.
Ms. Boop went on to star in more than 100 cartoons over her animated career, starring in several animated television specials and a few syndicated comic strips as well. The iconic character remains popular today. More than 185 licensees in America and about 375 internationally bear her likeness.
Happy birthday, Betty Boop!
