Sweetest Day: Treat sweethearts & less fortunate with sweet treats to eat

Move over, Valentine’s Day, and go grab your sweetheart. If your sweet tooth is screaming for a sweet treat to eat, you're in luck. In case you haven’t heard the latest buzz, one of the sweetest days of the year is almost here and Americans are more than ready to celebrate. Sweetest Day is an annual event is celebrated each year on the third Saturday in October.

Legend has it that Sweetest Day began in 1922 when candy company employee Herbert Birch Kingston distributed gifts and sweet treats to those less fortunate. Kingston spread his message of good cheer by handing out small gifts and tasty treats to those suffering from illness and disease, the elderly and disabled, shut-ins and orphans. It wasn’t long before others joined the effort.

While the holiday originally began in the Midwest, it gradually spread across the United States. Since then, many people across the nation have taken part in the annual event by giving sweet treats to orphans, shut-ins, people suffering from illnesses and diseases as well as friends, family and loved ones.
