Peace Officers Memorial Day

Each year, thousands of law enforcement officers from all over the world travel to Washington D.C. to honor the brave men and women who have lost their lives or been injured during the call of duty. May 15 is Peace Officers Memorial Day, an annual event that has been observed for decades.

In 1962, United States President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week of the 15th as Police Week, which also honors those who serve and protect us.

Each day, 900,000 sworn men and women around the nation put their lives on the line to protect us. Many officers are not only verbally assaulted, but are physically assaulted as well resulting in nearly 16,000 injuries annually.

President Barack Obama is encouraging governors around the country as well as governmental officials and the American public, to fly flags at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day. Thank you to the men and women who help keep us safe each and every day.

May 15 is also National Chocolate Chip Day.
