World Population Day

July 11 is World Population Day (WPD), an annual event launched in 1989 by the Governing Council of the United National Development Programme

The annual event was inspired by Five Billion Day - July 11, 1987 - the day when the world’s population reached five billion. WPD raises awareness about various issues that affect us all. Each year, governments, businesses, organizations and individuals from all over the world will observe the event by attending workshops, rallies and a variety of activities in honor of WPD.

As people live longer and healthier lives, the population continues to grow and challenges also increase. Hunger-related diseases, food and water shortages, insufficient sanitation, overcrowding, diminished air quality and environmental issues are just a few of the issues associated with overpopulation.

July 11 is also 7-Eleven Day (Free Slurpee Day), National Mojito Day and National Cheer Up the Lonely Day.
