National Relaxation Day: Relax!


August 15 is National Relaxation Day! Let’s face it – most folks are overworked, overwhelmed and over-stressed. American’s lead very hectic and busy lives and relaxing is just not on the schedule. First observed in Britain, this annual “holiday” reminds folks to sit back, relax and enjoy life!

According to the American Institute of Stress (AIS), stress is America’s number one health problem. Between 75 and 90 percent of all visits to primary-care doctors is due to stress related issues. And job stress is the leading source of stress on American adults.

While some stress is normal, other stress is not and can cause a myriad of health problemsincluding headaches, stomach disorders, high blood pressure, depression, obesity, insomnia and a weakened immune system. Long-term exposure to stress can influence your overall health and emotional well-being. People under stress often feel overwhelmed, display poor judgment, suffer memory problems and are unable to concentrate. While some events are beyond our control, learning how to manage stress is key to reduce the negative impacts stress has on your body and mind.

According to a recent survey commissioned by Princess Cruises, 75 percent of Americans want to see National Relaxation Day become an official holiday in the U.S. The report also found that nearly 25 percent of Americans have never had a relaxing vacation!
