Christmas Card Day
With Christmas right around the corner, now is the time to get those holiday greeting cards written, stamped and mailed. Dec. 9 celebrates those wonderful sentiments and sayings all wrapped up in a nice little card – it’s Christmas Card Day in the U.S.A!
This annual “holiday” honors innovator Sir Henry Cole, who hired illustrator John Callcott Horsley to create a special holiday card for his friends and loved ones back in 1843. Horsley went on to create the world’s first Christmas card – which depicted adults and children gathering around the holiday table. While 1,000 of the cards were actually made, a few still exist today. If you happen to own one of the cards, you’re in luck. The cards are quite valuable.
After those first Christmas greetings were delivered, sending Christmas cards has remained a tradition ever since. This holiday season, why not save a little money and make your own, one-of-a-kind greeting cards for free?
