When it comes to your health, being proactive is key. June 27 is National HIV Testing Day (NHTD), an annual campaign that encourages Americans to take control of their health by knowing their HIV status.

Founded in 1995 by the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA), National HIV Testing Day encourages people to “Take the Test, Take Control.” It's estimated that nearly 83 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 64 have been tested as of 2009. But while millions have been tested, millions more have not. In fact, more than half of American adults still have not been tested for HIV.

Many agencies and organizations will be offering educational events and/or free testing in honor of National HIV Testing Day.
