Giving Tuesday

'Tis the season – the shopping season, that is. Over the past few days, millions of bargain hunters hit the brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers to find the best bang for their holiday bucks during the annual Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday shopping events.

It’s Giving Tuesday, a global event that reminds us what the real meaning of the holidays is really about – giving back. First launched in 2012 by Henry Timms, #GivingTuesday is observed annually on the day after Cyber Monday.

The premise is simple. Each year, students, families, church groups, non-profits, businesses and organizations around the world participate in the annual event by working together to give. Whether you choose to support a specific charity, cause or organization with monetary donations or volunteer your time, talent or service, Giving Tuesday is all about generosity.

While many reputable organizations provide assistance for people, don’t forget our four-legged friends on this special day. Millions of unwanted, unloved, abused and neglected pets in shelters across the nation are dying waiting to find their furever homes. Please consider opening your heart and your home to an animal in need at your local animal shelter and/or Humane Society. If you are unable to adopt at this time, please consider providing a monetary donation or donating your time at your local shelter or rescue.

Giving Tuesday reminds us about the true spirit of the season - giving. And when we all work together for a common good, everyone benefits.
