Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss

When it comes to creativity, March 2 is a very special day for children and adults alike! One of the most beloved authors and illustrators in the world was born on this day back in 1904.

Theodor Seuss Geisel, Dr. Seuss, was born and raised in Springfield, MA. His mother, Henrietta, often soothed her young children by recanting rhymes from her childhood. Seuss often credited his mother for inspiring his creativity and love of rhymes.

Seuss attended Dartmouth College, where he served as editor-in-chief of college’s Jack-O-Lantern magazine. It's believed that is where he first used the Seuss pseudonym, which was also his mother’s maiden name. After studying at Oxford University in England, he returned to the United States and began a career as a cartoonist.

If you are a struggling writer, don't despair! His first book, "And to Think That I saw It on Mulberry Street," was rejected nearly 30 times before it was finally published. He went on to write 44 children’s books.. At the time of his death in 1991, Seuss had sold over 200 million copies of his beloved creations that sparked a host of memorable characters and movies.

His whimsical artwork and humorous books continue to be favorites with children all over the world. From "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" and "The Cat in the Hat", to "Green Eggs and Ham"and "Horton Hears a Who," children have always loved Dr. Seuss books!
