'Hoppy' National Beer Day: Raise your glass and cheer a great tasting beer

If you appreciate a good beer from time-to-time, hold onto your beer mug! Besides No Housework Day and International Beaver Day, April 7 is also National Beer Day in the U.S.A!

This annual beer day actually commemorates the ending of a very long, 13 year dry spell! On this day in 1933, the Cullen-Harrison Act was enacted, allowing the brewing, sale and consumption of 3.2 percent beer and wine in the United States.

When United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the bill into law, he reportedly said, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.” And Americans agreed! On April 6, thousands of thirsty people waited in line at their favorite pub waiting for the new law to go into effect, on “New Beer's Eve.” More than 1 million barrels of beer were consumed during the first 24 hours! On December 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment was ratified, ending Prohibition for good.

While many of us may not need a holiday to enjoy an ice cold brew, here’s your chance to kick your feet up, relax and raise your glass! And thanks to beer fan Justin Smith for creating National Beer Day back in 2009. Cheers!
