It's National Bologna Day: No baloney!

Today is National Bologna Day - no baloney! While the origins are unknown, this food holiday is celebrated every October 24. Who knew a luncheon meat would get its very own holiday?

Named after the Italian city, Bologna, this popular luncheon meat may conjure up all sorts of childhood memories. In fact, “b-o-l-o-g-n-a” was made famous by one of the most popular television commercials back in the 70s.

Americans eat 800 million pounds of bologna each year. So what is it? Not to gross you out or anything, but this beef, pork, chicken, turkey or venison sausage product usually contains leftover parts like organs and “end pieces,” whatever those are. Whether you prefer yours sandwiched between two slices of bread, baked, fried, pickled or grilled, today is the perfect day to enjoy a slice or two of bologna.

Oct. 24 is also Good and Plenty Day and World Polio Day.
