Mother's Day: Movies Dedicated to Moms


When it comes to special occasion, today is one of the most beloved days of the year. It's Mother's Day. After treating mom to breakfast in bed or a filling brunch, sit back, relax and enjoy an afternoon or evening of affordable fun. Why not pamper mom this Mother’s Day and make it movie night by treating mom to one of these entertaining flicks.

Gather up the family, make a batch of mom’s favorite popcorn and get out the Kleenex, just in case. Whether these movies make you laugh or cry, one thing is certain; they all shine the spotlight on all kinds of moms.

Mom Movies

StepMom – This movie, starring Julie Roberts, Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris, covers all the bases. Ms. Roberts plays the young and beautiful stepmother trying to fit in to a family. Susan Sarandon plays the mom and former wife to Harris, who is trying to cope with terminal cancer and the new woman in her family’s life.

Baby Boom – This lighthearted movie features Diane Keaton and Sam Shepard. Keaton plays a talented and successful business woman who is devoted to her work until her life is turned upside-down by inheriting a baby from a relative. So Keaton leaves her beloved city for rural life and soon finds the transition is less than perfect. But don’t worry - this story has a happy ending.

Mr. Mom – This funny 1983 movie is about a man, Michael Keaton, who becomes a stay-at-home dad. He soon learns being a mom is much more difficult and different than he ever imagined. Funny lady Teri Garr plays the mom.

Mrs. Doubtfire - Robin Williams and Sally Field play parents in this fun-filled movie. Field, fed up with Williams antics, wants out. And the hilarious Williams will do just about anything to stay in his kid's lives. Watch Williams’s transformation from screw-up dad to responsible parent.

Kramer vs Kramer – This movie is a real tear-jerker. Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep play parents to an adorable son, played by Justin Henry. One day, Streep just takes off, leaving Hoffman to be both mom and dad to the little boy. Watch as he pulls himself up and dusts himself off. That is, until Streep returns.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding – This fun movie is all about family, the good and the bad. Nia Vardalos, who wrote and starred in the film, plays a Greek woman who falls in love with handsome hunk John Corbett. So what’s the problem? He is not Greek!

Monster-in-Law - Jane Fonda plays an over-bearing mother, Viola, who stops at nothing to keep her son from marrying Jennifer Lopez. Wanda Sykes plays Fonda’s hilarious assistant in this funny 2005 flick.

Yours, Mine and Ours – This movie stars Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball. Watch as the lonely widow and widower meet, fall in love and begin a life together. Just watching a typical day in this blended household is sure to make you appreciate the family you have.

On Golden Pond – This heart-warming movie stars Jane Fonda, Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda. Although Jane has a good relationship with her mom, played by Hepburn, she struggles to improve her strained relationship with her dad, played by her real dad Henry Fonda. The movie highlights the relationships between an aging husband and wife, parents and child and step-child.
