National Amaretto Day

Whether you prefer yours on the rocks, in coffee, in a decadent dessert or all by itself, today celebrates the popular Italian liqueur with a hint of almond flavoring. April 19 is National Amaretto Day.

While Amaretto is relatively new to the United States, the liqueur has been enjoyed around the world for centuries. Legend has it that back in 1525, artist Bernadino Luini was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna of the Miracles in Italy. A beautiful innkeeper was chosen as the model for the project.

The model fell in love with the artist. In order to show her love and appreciation, she gave the artist a special flask filled with a sweet almond-flavored liqueur she created from the trees in her own garden. That secret recipe became DiSaronno Amaretto and eventually went into commercial production.

Today is also National Garlic Day!
