National Gumbo Day

If you love diving into a bowl of piping hot soup on a chilly afternoon or evening, you’re in luck. Oct. 12 is National Gumbo Day! While the origins of this annual food holiday are unknown, Louisiana is famous for this special dish.

In case you’ve never tried it, gumbo is a rich, thick stew loaded with all sorts of delicious goodies. While there are different variations of this fabulous stew, besides the basic roux , gumbo usually includes shellfish, veggies and/or meat and is served over rice.

In honor of National Gumbo Day, help yourself to a heapin’ helping of some gumbo.
