National Lucky Penny Day: 25 famous and funny quotes about money

Are you in the mood to get lucky? Well, you may just be in luck! On the heels of Be a Millionaire Day, this annual “holiday” is also about money. May 23 is National Lucky Penny Day or Lucky Penny Day.

While many folks wouldn’t bat an eyelash and probably walk on by one today, finding a shiny penny used to be considered good luck back in the day. There was even a famous saying about it:

See a penny, pick it up,

All day long you’ll have good luck.

Give it to a faithful friend,

Then your luck will never end.

Whether you spotted one on the ground, under the couch or in a drawer, finding a one cent coin was a good thing, unless of course you were superstitious. While finding a penny facing heads up was good news indeed, it was actually considered bad luck to pick up a penny if it was heads down.

How to Celebrate National Lucky Penny Day

In honor of today’s occasion, why not gather up the kiddies and go on a penny hunt? Be sure to pick up ONLY the lucky pennies though!

Or why not take a moment or two out of your busy schedule and collect all those unused coins in your purse, wallet, piggy banks or jars? Believe it or not, those pennies do add up to some serious coin! You could invest them in a few penny stocks or haul them to the bank. Even if the cool cash only adds up to a few bucks, why not donate the money to a food bank, favorite charity or your local Humane Society? It’s a great way to clean up the clutter and give at the same time!
