National Senior Citizen's Day: Celebrating America’s seniors

Senior Citizen's Day

Aug. 21 is National Senior Citizen’s Day, an annual event that celebrates America’s seniors. On this day, Americans are encouraged to honor and recognize the countless contributions and sacrifices senior citizens have made throughout their lives to their families, communities and the nation.

United States President Ronald Reagan proclaimed Aug. 21 National Senior Citizen’s Day back in 1988:

"Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim August 21, 1988, as National Senior Citizens Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

As Americans are living longer and healthier lives, the senior citizen population continues to grow. Whether they live in a retirement center or live alone in their own homes, many senior citizens live lonely lives. Today is the perfect opportunity to visit that older friend, neighbor or loved one and brighten his or her day.

Aug. 21 is also National Spumoni Day. Sweet!
