National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day: It's Time to Get Your Ugly On!

Uh oh. Have you heard the news? One of the most highly anticipated holidays in the entire year is almost here. Get ready to bedazzle your friends, folks. The third Friday in December is National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day.

This fun-filled holiday is the perfect day to surprise (stun) your friends, family and co-workers by wearing the ugliest, tackiest and most hideous sweater you own - and the uglier the better! You know the ones – those bulky, ill-fitting cardigans, vests and sweaters stashed (hidden) in the darkest crevices of your closet or drawers.

According to an online interview with co-founder Brent Foreman, the occasion was launched by a group of ugly Christmas sweater “aficionados” who wanted to spread a little holiday cheer during that hectic time of year when things can be downright stressful. After a few celebrations, the group created a website and along with word-of-mouth and social media, National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day has become a super-popular event around the world. And this year’s event is expected to be bigger than ever.

Tip Top Tacky Tips to Make Ugly Sweaters Even Uglier

Making your sweater extra ugly has never been easier, And believe it or not, it doesn't have to cost an arm-and-a-leg to uglify that sweater!

  • Embellish your garment with things you have around the home - tinsel, lace, pompoms, ribbon, beads and/or buttons.

  • Glue, tape or pin old Christmas jewelry including earrings, pins, necklaces and bracelets onto the sweater.

  • And how about a little (or a lotta) glitter and faux snow to get you in the spirit?

  • Add a few non-conventional embellishments such as small wreaths, gingerbread men, tiny trees, candy canes, small stuffed animals, mini-Santa, elves, Christmas ornaments, bells, wrapping paper and even battery-operated lights for some extra bling.

When it comes to ugly - creativity and imagination is key. Ahhh - there's nothing better than wearing an ugly sweater!
