National Wine Day: Cheers!
Have you heard the latest buzz? One of the very best holidays in the entire year is finally here. Go grab the corkscrew, folks! May 25 is officially National Wine Day in the U.S.A! Although the origins of this annual occasion are unknown, who needs an excuse to enjoy a fine glass of wine, right?
People have been drinking wine for centuries. In fact, the world's oldest known bottle of wine, discovered during a dig in 1867, actually dates back to 325 A.D. That ancient bottle is on permanent display at the Historisches Museum der Pfalz in Speyer, Germany.
Whether you prefer red, white, dry, sweet or sparkling, besides tasting good, wine may actually be good for your health. Some suggest wine may reduce forgetfulness, prevent bone loss and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attacks. Wine may also have calming effects on the body that helps reduce stress and maintain healthy blood pressure. Red wine also contains powerful antioxidants which may inhibit the development of certain cancer and may lower the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. But like most things in life – the key is moderation.
Whether you consider yourself a wine connoisseur, novice or weekend warrior, today is the day to enjoy that favorite tried-and-true bottle or brand new brand you’ve been eyeing in honor of National Wine Day. Cheers!
