Sadie Hawkins Day: Ladies, here's your chance to dance!

Did you know there is a special day of the year dedicated to a popular Al Capp comic character? Today celebrates a character in the popular cartoon Lil’ Abner. It's Sadie Hawkins Day! Depending on your calendar of choice, the occasion is celebrated on different dates in November. Some observe the date on Nov. 13, some on Nov. 14 and some observe the occasion on the Saturday following

Nov. 9.

The first mention of Sadie Hawkins Day was first made on Nov. 13, 1937. Poor Sadie. She was not very attractive. In fact, many said she was downright ugly and was described as the “the homeliest gal in all them hills.” In order to find a husband for his 35-year-old spinster daughter, her pa created Sadie Hawkins Day. A special foot-race was held in the town of Dogpatch. When an unmarried woman caught up with a single man, he had to marry her. No ifs, ands or buts about it! The idea caught on. Colleges and schools around the country held honest-to-goodness, real-live Sadie Hawkins Day events, including races and dances. Women were able to turn-the-tables and grab them thar bulls by the horns.

OK, ladies. Here is your chance. If there is a special feller in your life that makes your heart pitter-patter, ask him out! Bite the bullet and do it and you can even blame it on a gal named Sadie. Happy Sadie Hawkins Day!
