Summer Solstice: The Longest Day & Shortest Night of the Year is Here!

Bring on the bikini and get out the sunscreen! After a long winter and wacky spring, the official beginning of summer, also known as the Summer Solstice, is finally here!

The Summer Solstice is the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The sun is at its highest or most northerly point in the sky in the Northern Hemisphere. While it is the longest day of the year, it is not necessarily the warmest.

Also referred to as Midsummer, Summer Solstice is considered a major celestial event that has been celebrated in both ancient and modern times. While many around the world celebrate the annual event in a variety of ways, perhaps the best known celebration is the United Kingdom’s Summer Solstice at Stonehenge, where thousands of people from around the globe watch the sun rise above the most famous prehistoric monument in the world.

While many welcome the first day of summer, this day also marks the beginning of winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Happy Summer Solstice!
