World Egg Day: 'Eggcellent' holiday celebrates the affordable egg

Since 1966, people from all over the world have taken part in an annual event that celebrates the incredible, edible and affordable egg! It’s World Egg Day, an annual food holiday observed each year on the second Friday in October. All sorts of cooking demos, competitions, activities and festivals will take place all over the globe in honor of the yearly occasion. “Eggcellent!”

Whether you prefer yours hard-boiled, scrambled, fried, over-easy or sunny side up, eggs are loaded with all sorts of essential vitamins and minerals. Besides vitamins A, D, E, K, iron, choline and zinc, did you know that eggs contain the “highest quality protein you can buy?”

Approximately 1 billion people are underfed and undernourished today. The International Egg Commission (IEC), the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and egg associations are working together to help make sure people in need have access to high quality food on a regular basis. Eggs are not only affordable and readily available, but also have a low carbon footprint, too.

Happy World Egg Day!
